Facts About The Environment and Food Choices

In the past we were supposed to eat with a pyramid in mind.  Grains were at the bottom, now we go by a plate.  We are advised to eat more vegetables.  Grains are no longer the item we are supposed to eat the most.  I do believe that our guidelines now are healthier although, I don’t think it’s the guidelines that are to blame.

It’s the ENVIRONMENT, ADVERTISING, AND FOODS THAT TASTE TOO GOOD.

We also need to consider emotional, psychological, and mental health but when we look at environment compared to our food guidelines it’s obvious that our environment is not set up for healthy choices. In the past we changed our guidelines because our nation only kept gaining weight.  Was the amount of convenience stores, fast food, and advertising taken into consideration when we made this decision?  gas-station-1111956_1280I don’t know about you, but if I see unhealthy food I want it!   We should also take into consideration that there is increasing evidence that grains aren’t as healthy as what we once thought.  Fruits, and vegetables should always be a main part of our diet!  In my opinion we should eat more vegetables than anything else.  Like most of us I don’t follow this most of the time!

Some of us spend countless hours planning food, reading, and exercising only to binge at the end of the day.  It’s amazing how dedicated some people are, and they just cannot make it work.  On the other end of the spectrum some of us decide that we are going to eat grilled chicken instead of pizza, and they complete this without a second thought.

What is it with healthy food being so much more expensive?   Here is an idea, let’s start making fruits, vegetables, and nuts more affordable.

Our nation as a whole would be INCREDIBLY HEALTHIER if any one of the following guidelines would happen.  Naturally it WON’T EVER happen.  Large companies make too much money, and unfortunately we are too addicted.  Yes, it’s good for us to eat unhealthy things in moderation.  For most of us moderation is hard to achieve.

  • Children at public schools could be required to eat a plate of vegetables before they are given the rest of their food.
  • Taxes on convenience foods could be higher… How about 50%?
  • Every convenience store should be required to offer a certain amount of fruits, vegetables, and nuts. I don’t know how many times I’ve gone through one just trying to find a packet of nuts.
  • Find a way to make fruits, and vegetables cheaper.

Do you have any other ideas?
